Double Page Spread

Andrew Buck is an indie artist worthy of recognition working in a very vibrant, psychedelic style. He and Wendi have a conversation about the nature of "trippy" art, cosmic Kirby, David Lynch as a visual artist, meditation and opening consciousness, his self published book "Satani-Kill", and the influence of Kenneth Anger and transgressive cinema.

It's the annual traditional visit of longtime friends of the podcast, Andrew Shaw and Dan Pua! This year they are wrapping up the best of summer, except apparently it isn't summer in Australia. But that doesn't stop them from discussing the best books and movies and cakes of the past 3 months! Wendi has had the "summer of bears" and more drama at the 2 banana job, Andrew's comic "Cul de Sac" is finally on Comixology, and Dan takes more pictures of his kitties. Apologies for the less than perfect audio, thank you for sticking with us!

Karl Slominski is a real go getter- an ambitious artist who works in bright, psychedelic angles and colors, he has no hesitation in telling you what he wants and hopes to achieve. His art style is a refreshing mix of splashy paint and inky linework, best seen in the graphic novel, "Teeter Topple" which he also wrote- a twisty mental tale of a young man's breakdown. He is starting a new imprint called "New Noise" which will feature work from him, and his partner, screenwriter Jenna Lyn Wright. We talk about the balance of their relationship, their "meet cute", his new books "Alternauts" and "Cult of Ikarus", and things you can do with the Fantastic Four.

Artist Zach Lehner is the special guest this week as he celebrates the release of vol. 2 of "Junior Braves of the Apocalypse" from One Press, written by Greg Smith and Michael Tanner. Creating a horror comic for young adults is a delicate balance of pushing the edge of fear and violence. He discusses the inevitable "Walking Dead" comparisons and how it differs from "Lord of the Flies" or any other "teens in danger" tropes, and reaching out to libraries.

Everything about artist/writer Michel Fiffe is crafted from a place of reverence, sincerity and respect. His long running indie comic, Copra, is a love letter to the 80s run of "Suicide Squad" and his work with Image Comics reimagining Rob Liefeld's "Bloodstrike" is not tongue in cheek in the slightest. Fiffe wears his influences well but shapes them through his unique independent lens. He and Wendi discuss these as well as the underrated impact of Kim Yale on women in comics, and a fascinating discussion of his correspondence with Steve Ditko and differentiating hating "fandom" but loving your fans.

audio note: there is an echo on Wendi's dialogue, hopefully you can bear through it for this great conversation.

In this corner, we have the spectacular J. Gonzo, artist and writer of "La Mano Del Destino", a comic set in a fictional 1960's Mexico about a supernatural luchador bent on revenge. He discusses all the thought and detail presented in the color and printing of this retro story, along with the history of Mexican wrestling, the importance of masks to identity, why we can't see the El Santo movies anymore, masculinity and machismo in Latino culture, and who gets to use Batman's weight room.

"Rock Candy Mountain" is a hilarious and action packed comic detailing the adventures of hobos, and talking to writer/artist Kyle Starks and colorist Chris Schweizer is equally fast paced. It's a delirious book packed with colorful characters that's part historical, part supernatural and always ridiculous. They break down the false stereotypes of hobos, the code they live by, parody vs. satire, how to pick your hobo name, wuxia kung fu movies, the closing of Toys R Us and so much more.

She came into comics working at Neal Adams' studio where she honed her skills at lettering, inking, writing and editing, was accepted into the DC Comics writers' workshop where she got to write a Hawkgirl story, has written part of Dynamite's "Swords of Sorrow" crossover, and comics based on the tv shows "Revenge" and "Charmed". Coming up she has her own crime comic "12 Devils Dancing" from Action Lab, as well as a "Daredevil" annual and a run on "Xena: Warrior Princess".  Sybil Danning is a goddess of 80s action film cinema. Statuesque and vivacious, she featured in such films as "Howling 2", "Battle Beyond the Stars", "Chained Heat" and "Reform School Girls". Wendi and guest host Brian Kirst of "Big Gay Horror Fan" have a fantastic time listening to her tell Hollywood stories about working with people like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Clint Eastwood, wrangling Klaus Kinski, the behind the scenes work of producing your own films, writing her new comic book "Ruger", and being a feminist icon. Prepare for a silly and NSFW episode as Wendi chats with very dear friend and return guest, writer Andrew Shaw. In addition to dirty sounding perfume descriptions, the inappropriateness of a horse at comic convention, talk of Michael Rooker, wrestler Joey Ryan, 70s porn and how Wendi almost got fired over suspicious banana behavior, they get down to the serious business of Andrew's new book "Cul De Sac". Billed as "An Australian Horror Story" it combines the exceptional painting of Will Pleydon against a backdrop of the idyllic 50s in an unsettling anthology. If you're a fan of the bawdy "No Apologies" crossover episodes, this is a must listen.

Dan Panosian is just a cool guy. He is an artist who has paid his dues for years, working his way up through Image Comics inking people like Rob Liefeld, doing covers for books like "Daredevil" and X-Men titles, pencilling books like "Spelljammer" at DC. He has worked in almost every aspect of comics and is finally ready to bring it all together for himself with the new creator owned book "Slots" from Skybound. A tale of a down on his luck boxer returning to his family and his roots, it draws on classic Las Vegas tropes and new traditions in the glitzy city, delving into the seedy underbelly of MMA and burlesque. Panosian, no stranger to tough guy competitions, is a man who brings his genuine love of fighting to a human story. So join us for talk about Frank Grillo, the evolution of Jumbo's Clown Room, John Steinbeck and a hilarious stripper pole story.

In this episode, Wendi examines the creators of two very different spy books from Image Comics. Both writers tell stories of the cold war influenced by their impressions growing up.

First, she talks to Rich Tommaso, writer and artist of "Spy Seal". In "The Corten Steel Phoenix" he tells the story of a seal forced into dangerous circumstances beyond his control. He uses anthropomorphic animals to weave a web of politics and intrigue.

After the break, she has a chat with Antony Johnston on the day the film, "Atomic Blonde" is released. Based on his graphic novel "The Coldest City", Charlize Theron portrays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton in her very cool, calculated style. He discusses his involvement in the filmmaking process and how much it detracts from and stays true to the source material. He has a new series out now, "Ghost Station Zero"- vol. 2 of his series "Codename: Baboushka", an action packed, pulp thriller with a sexy Russian female lead.

Andrew Sanford is a man with a compulsion. Longtime cohost of "Marvel Noise" and "Indie Noise" podcasts, he is here to share some insight on his extensive, inexplicable collection of "slabbed" comics. He and Wendi go into the collector's mind of why CGC is popular and why comic readers are willing to seal away their books in plastic forever. Andrew has a fascinating collection of hundreds of "slabbed" books of questionable content and quality, and is knowledgable in all the tricks people use to get a higher grade on their comics. From recoloring and restapling binding to the now mandatory act of "pressing", they ask the important question- is "slabbing" bullshit?

Please excuse the boomy audio of this episode, it was recorded live from the International School of Comics in Chicago. This is a very special dialogue with artists Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother, Wonder Woman: The True Amazon, Sandman), Jim Terry (The Crow: Skinning the Wolves, Alice Cooper vs. CHAOS), and Maria Wolf Lopez. Separately, the three of them have gone to the Standing Rock camp in ND where Native American Water Protectors are trying to prevent construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which will pollute important water aquifers all across the midwest. They explain the situation from an eye witness perspective, discuss what supplies are desperately needed at the camps, extol on the spirituality and generosity the people and Maria tells us of her experiences at the first Indigenous Comic Convention.

I hope you enjoy this very serious and enlightening episode. Please go to www.standingrock.org for more current information and ways to help.

Onrie Kompan has defied the rules of the comic industry to be very successful on his own terms. Without the help of a publisher or mainstream comic distribution he is a one man army. Currently he has a documentary being made about his remarkable achievement of selling over 1500 comics at NYCC. Not bad for an American writing a historical comic about a Korean sea battle. His work is featured in Korean museums, he has been invited to do many speaking engagements and has been a consultant on a movie about the life of Yi Soon Shin. This is an uplifting episode about the power of believing in comics and the lessons of how to be a good neighbor at conventions and raise everyone up with you.

In this episode, Wendi talks to two creative teams of popular webcomics- first half with artist JK Woodward (Star Trek, Doctor Who, Fallen Angel) and writer Chris Kipiniak about their book, Behemoth, now available in a 4 story arc from Monkeybrain Comics. Best described as "Island of Dr. Moreau meets the Dirty Dozen" it details the story of a girl's descent into monsterhood and joining an elite mercenary team of teens in varying degrees of transformation. All of it is available now digitally, only 99 cents each, through Comixology.

After that, it's time for the team behind the long running book, PI Jane- cowriters Lauren Burke (Womanthology) and Greg Sorkin and artist Tony Maldonado. They bring their comedic sensibilities to discussing the funny, irreverent, pop culture style of the girl detective, as well as the popular side story of "Cake Vs. Pie" and Tony's skill at drawing violent food. Soon to have new issues released through Caliber, you can find the story until now at Monkeys Plus Typewriters.

In Kickstarter news- check out "Scratches"- a collection of unsettling horror stories created by Chicago based independent artists JSB, Leo Perez, Angel Onofre and John Michael Lennon as well as help from Ali Canterella and a cover by Menton3.
